GET LOCAL: The Launching of Community “WakeUps”
WakeUpWalMart.com is launching a new community campaign to kick off our second
year that will bring together supporters from local communities. We are calling
them “WakeUps.”
Once a month, on the first Wednesday of every month, supporters
will gather in communities across the country to talk about the latest Wal-Mart
news, build support for our campaign, and take action to change Wal-Mart.
Change happens at the local level. Change happens because people like you
decide to take leadership roles. Change happens when people come together with
their neighbors, family, friends, co-workers and others who believe in the
same goals.
People have started to learn the truth about Wal-Mart’s negative impact,
including poverty-level wages, inadequate health care and increased crime and traffic congestion
on our local communities. We need you to help us continue to educate the public
at the local level.
What Does it take to become a Local WakeUp Leader?
WakeUp leaders are changing Wal-Mart by agreeing to:
- Participate in a monthly conference call with other leaders from around
the country;
- Lead one meeting and one action per month;
- Use the WakeUpWalMart.com website to publicize your meetings and update
your group’s profile.
To help make your local WakeUp a success, the WakeUpWalMart.com national field
office will provide:
- A monthly conference call to help you plan your meetings and actions;
- Flyers and other materials for your meetings and actions – available
on a special section of the WakeUpWalMart.com website and one packet mailed
to you per month prior to the monthly meetings;
- Help with recruiting members for your group and reaching out to local press;
- A web site for WakeUp community groups where you can easily post meetings,
see members of the group, run a discussion and receive up-to-date national
information on the campaign.
