New developments concerning last year's tragedy prompt renewed concerns for store safety
UPDATE: Thanks to all who have who have written in with tips, please continue sending your stories.

How safe was Walmart's Black Friday this year? Here are some of the headlines from the aftermath:

For Walmart, Black Friday has become synonymous with the tragic death of Jdimytai Damour: the Walmart worker trampled by an ill-managed "doorbuster" crowd at a Long Island Walmart. After a barrage of criticism following the stampede, Walmart characterized the tragedy as a singular "incident." Now, the truth is coming out.

According to Newsday, Damour's Walmart faced a similar stampede in 2007. The crowd pushed the store's front door off its hinges before trampling fallen customers. The same article also covers a damning sworn statement by a local Walmart employee. During the Black Friday 2008 investigation, he noted, "I was there, like in past years, to help people up as they fall coming in the doors."

Looking back, the 2008 Black Friday stampede appears to have been a predictable annual affair. Walmart failed to adequately prepare for it. Mr. Damour died because of it.

Now, You can play a part in keeping this year's Black Friday tragedy free.

Use the tools on this page to alert holiday shoppers, spread the word about our campaign, and keep us updated on Walmart's handling of Black Friday crowds.

Remember, Black Friday is likely to be bigger than ever in 2009. Polls suggest the possibility of a near 25% increase in participation this year over last. This, in concert with Walmart's aggressive promotion of holiday sales, will almost assuredly generate massive crowds this Friday.

If Walmart couldn't anticipate the Long Island tragedy, we can't rely on it to handle record crowds this year. We know Walmart has splurged on advertising, but we need your help to ensure it doesn't skimp on security.

There are three easy ways for you to make Walmart a little safer this year. Please, take action today.

Ogera Charles, Jdimytai Damour's father, has a simple request this year: that "the company and shoppers will do whatever is needed to prevent a repeat of last year’s disaster." Our hopes are the same. In that spirit, please join us in promoting safety and accountability during Walmart's Black Friday events.

I work @ a wal-mart & I think wal-mart should be held responable for their actions on black friday.

I was on hand for the 2009 event at the Wal-Mart store in Cullman, Alabama. In fact, I was on the front lines as one of the people that guards the pallet of merchandise to see that no one touches it until 5 am, when the blitz....er um..."Event" starts. It was a madhouse of greed & mob rule mentality!

At 5 am when I removed the plastic from two pallets of gps devices (Tom Toms), both pallets of 138 devices each was gone in less than sixty seconds. Twice I was nearly knocked to the ground, but managed to keep the greedy mob from trampling me. But what flat out pissed me off was when I saw an elderly man get caught in the mob & knocked to the ground. People were literally stepping over him & not the least bit concerned for him as they dove onto the merchandise.

By this point I had managed to get back away from the mob, but when I saw this elderly man on the ground fighting with a closed fist & punching others just so he could get back on his feet & escape the mob, naturally I felt compelled to do something. So I attempted to fight my way through the crowd & come to the mans aid & help him get away from the crowd, but the mob was too powerful.

I could not reach the man & escort him to safety. I began to think that I was going to have to get violent & start attacking members of the mob just to reach him, but fortunately the man was finally able to get away.

There`s nothing more frustrating than to try & come to a person`s aid, but not being able too!!!

Sorry Wal-Mart, but you can do better than this! I will not condone nor support any business that blatantly jeopardizes the safety of others, especially for the almighty buck! You can count me out on this from here on out!!!

*Blair Jett*

The story continues...

I was just reprimanded for my conduct in this event. Wal-Mart has given me what they call a "D-Day", in which I am sent home with pay for a day & must decide whether I want my job or not. It`s basically a one day suspension.

Now before I continue let me make one thing clear here. There`s actually two reasons why I was given this D-Day. One is because of my attendance record, which I`m not going to bother to discuss at this point. The second reason is because after this incident took place, I approached a manager (Danny) & the store manager (Gary Martin) & attempted to express my dissatisfaction with the manner in how these "events" are managed. I told Danny & Mr Martin "There has got to be a safer way to do these events".

Danny stated "We`re trying" & walked away. Mr Martin said nothing & walked the other way.

Now in their defense let me say that it`s true, Wal-Mart is trying to do things differently to improve the public safety for these events. But it`s important to understand my frustration. I do not enjoy nor condone any activity that jeopardizes public safety, & I get no enjoyment at watching people get knocked to the ground by a mob.

Others may think it`s funny,

BUT I DON`T!!

Anyways, after walking around for a long time trying to control my anger, I later entered the office where two other managers (Michelle & Janet) were. There was another employee there by the name of Vicki. I attempted to express my dismay over the blatant lack of public safety for these events, but as I spoke, I felt my anger increasing & as though I was about to blow my stack. So rather than doing that, I said out loud "F**k It!" & kicked the door jam with my foot, & walked out.

That incident was part of the reason for my D-Day. I was told that several other people heard me & complained about my language. I challenge that allegation & IF anyone complained, I got ten bucks that says it was Vicki.

I`m not going to say that my D-Day was unwarranted, I choose to remain silent on that aspect...for now. But I`m certainly not going to apologize to anyone for my conduct. These events are big business for a huge corporation to make money, & when I see an elderly man get knocked to the floor & semi-stampeded by a greedy careless mob, I GET ANGRY!

I get even more angry when I see it happening & can`t do anything about it!

Wal-Mart does not approve of their associates voicing bad publicity for their evil empire like this & I risk losing my job because of what i`m writing here. But I will not keep quiet about important things like this regardless of what consequences I may face.

There are things that I believe in & I`ll never sell my soul!!

I was on my way to work this morning (Friday about 6:45 AM CST), and it's about
a mile from home to work. The SmellMart is about 3/4 of the way there. I was
less than a 1/4 mile from home, driving in the left lane (I need to turn left
when I get to the intersection for work). The back-up in the right lane,
waiting just to get into the SmellMart parking lot started at the 1/4 mile mark
... so, there was a 1/2 mile line long of cars in the right lane, who couldn't
even turn into the SmellMart parking lot because there were no parking spaces
for them to even park in.

Quit picking on Wal-Mart. A fight broke out at a local Toys R Us This past Black Friday. It is the greed and commercialism of merchant and consumer that is the root here and if one is wise-saving a few dollars is not worth the crowds, uncivility and utter ugliness that is the mindset of "'I have to buy this item". Further more there are a significant number of people who purchase these ""great buys"" and resell for a profit. This is not what these holidays are supposed to be and we as a civilized country should do away with this abonination called ""Black Friday"". Pass it on.

None of us steal from stores. Years ago, my dad did some, like on a pack of carrots or something. I doubt he even thinks that way anymore. I never did and I don't think my mom ever has. I like never buy stuff from China right now, especially in the dog toy area and in toothbrushes. My dad makes lots of health mistakes and world mistakes when choosing what to buy. So does my mom. I teach them though!!! I'm not saying we can't do things on occasion, but so much of this happens several days a week. Nevertheless, I in a way, do whatever PETA asks of me and while not donating, we have 2 older dogs and live on less than $30,000 a year. Nevertheless, I try not to buy the cheapest of things because I want to help the world and global warming at the same time. The store and government see this as thinking we like 1 quality or size better or color or have more money so they can make prices go up. Not so precise, but with obesity rising, it's okay. For most of this though, I think the EBT food stamp company needs to help, not Walmart, though if they had their cameras on, then, through all the problems we'd see on TV or hearing the government was troubled or something, all the more suicidal thoughts and insomnia we'd have, so, actually, other than global warming, the war and stuff, and coming home to 2 blue-collar parents that never really 'think', not even correctly and hearing about the rainforests but parents wanting 100 watt lights or so, I'm shocked but am doing the best I can. Leave a can behind you cashiers for extra tips though. That would help. We used to have to do that back when our parents were young.

M. M. writes

I have been boycotting Wal-Mart since I first read about their horrendous policies, including their attitude toward their employees, their "marriage" to China, and their destruction of the environment. I try to encourage other people not to shop at Wal-Mart. Usually, my pleas go unheeded. Most people in the area in which I live seem to flock to
Wal-Mart like lemmings. It is as though there were a computer chip planted in each person's brain, luring them to worship at Wal-Mart. It scares me! There are many other good stores in our area -- with much better prices, by the way! -- yet people practically chant "Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart" as if it were a spiritual mantra of sorts. It is not surprising that such a mentality would lead to the horrible tragedy that occurred in that Long Island Wal-Mart last Black Friday. Wake up, people! Wal-Mart does not care about its employees or its customers. I say, "Stop shopping at Wal-Mart!"
R. O. writes

I refuse to shop at Walmart.
K. R. writes

After the very first incident you'd think that maybe they'd put aside their greed to protect the people that fuel their bank accounts, but no. Not only is Mr. Damour's death tragic, it is completely abhorring. Walmart needs to step up and take responsibility for things like this. Once it happened, precautions should have exceeded the need because it's better to be over-prepared than under. The shoppers that trampled the poor man and also each other should be held accountable as well. I remember reading the article and seeing that because of his death shoppers were being asked to leave and they wouldn't. There should never be, at ANY point, some occurrence where a death is "interrupting" your shopping spree.
Do everyone a favor, Walmart. Invest in some cattle prods and show the people that you cater to any untoward actions will get them a nice voltage dose. Maybe that's what it will take to do right after all the wrong you've done. Save some lives, grow some brains.

Fortunately I have reached a point where I'm not sucked in by this stupid, unsustainable, and embarrassing behavior. Black Friday is emblematic of how far the US has sunk - cheap junk for next to nothing at the expense of workers world-wide, the environment, and tragically the lives of some. As long as we can keep buying junk , everything is ok in "America", right? The Wal-mart phenomena stands out as a last bastion of an empire than has disintegrated.

In my opinion walmart will NEVER change unless they are forced to. So with that in mind I think EVERYONE regardless if you like them or not should completely boycot the company and give them the choice... Get their crap together and start doing right by ALL empoyee's, supliers etc. and untill they do so we'll do our business elsewhere. People have allowed walmart to get so big that it's now next to impossible to stop them. They are just like all the oil cartels, if they don't like something they just buy their way around it and people allow it to happen with only a little grumbling that gets nothing done. I haven't shopped at walmart for over 4 years and will NOT return untill they start operating like a respectful company and treating their employee's and suppliers with equal respect. But as well all know AMERICANS (yes I am one) are too jelly spined to stand up and say something about anything because we might offend someone. Boohoo give me a break and grow a pair already! That willfully and blatantly ignorant people looking to save money are so unaware of the child and slave labor providing the "low costs" that insures cheap, plastic (ding! ding! ding! made from oil) crap will inundate the world and land fills for a long time is atrocious. Time for people to realize that Sprawl-Mart in its lust for ever-greater profits has helped to bankrupt America's values as well as our economy. Sprawl-Mart ruins the middle class in America on daily basis, by, among other things, driving local family-owned stores out of business. It is amazing that the "socialism" people worry about is what Sprawl-Mart and other big "chain" (how ironic) stores like Home Depot, K-Mart, Lowe's Kohl's, Target, McDonalds,Burger King, Applebee's, Olive Garden, and Starbuck's practice: no variety or surprises, all the merchandise the same all the time. I stopped shopping at Wal-mart years ago. They are the largest perpetrators of wage theft in America, if any company needed a union, its this one. A good book to read, "Wage Theft in America" by Beth Bobo. Wal-Mart also participated in taking out life insurance policies on their employees, called "dead Peasants" (watch "Capitalism, A Love Story), when the employee died, they kept every dollar. They say they have stopped this practice, did they cancel thousands of policies they had already taken out?
S. L. writes

Nothing short of a very lengthy series of books could describe the depressing, sickening, hostile experience of working at Sam's Club which is owned & operated by WalMart. Our new store manager seems decent, but why do the despicable managers still remain after many years?

Of course the in-store "spies" who are the pet brats of various managers enjoy themselves - talking, eating, playing for hours on the clock each day... When the employees who actually work complain about the numerous injustices there, and the safety or health hazards, etc.. the pet brats report it to management.

I no longer shop at Sam's Club or WalMart. When I briefly lapsed by shopping there I felt dirty - as though I had betrayed myself by spending my wages at the very store that had abused me as an employee for so many years.

Lazy, greedy people pretend that they can't afford not to shop there, but the truth is that there are many other affordable places to shop - both locally and online. In fact I often find better bargains and quality when I shop elsewhere. My true friends do not shop at Sam's Club or WalMart because they are disgusted with what they already knew about the company before I began working there..

While it truly is greed that motivates companies to open their stores at 5:00 a.m. to pander to the shoppers, the shoppers themselves are equally to blame for shopping there, and at that hour, and to become so psychotic in anticipation of shopping that they would break down doors and trample other people to death. This goes beyond "sick"! Those shoppers should also be held accountable. Any shopper who exhibits disorderly conduct should be arrested on the spot - before they have a chance to kill someone. It's only shopping, people - not a fire or earthquake!

Shame on the shoppers too as well as the management for not providing more security.

I find it difficult to even think of going into WalMart re their usual lack of care of their employees re health insurance and other negative practices.

This will be the first Thanksgiving I will miss because Wal-Mart is so greedy for money it has to stay open on Thanksgiving.
I am disgusted at what happened to Jdimytai Damour but I can say I am as much disgusted with this corporation for the scare tactics it takes to get their employees to work on Thanksgiving. They scheduled all of its employees to work overtime but doesn't tell them they can’t force them to work overtime. Instead Wal-Mart lets their employees believe they will lose their jobs if they don't work the hours they are scheduled. Why do I work at Wal-Mart then? Guess What? I've worked in sweat shops over my life and can relate to abuse of employees by employers who can only see and understand profits. I'm very proud to say that I've never stepped inside of a Wal-Mart store and never will. I've also told numerous friends to cease their shopping at Wal-Mart. They treat their employees like serfs and the slogan should read not Wal-Mart Always Low Prices to Wal-Mart Always Low Wages. I find it disgusting that the number of people who actually shop there.

Wal Mart started the import of junk products and has caused other stores to follow. Sad, America use to care about quality. Let them build all the Wal Marts they want then do not shop there.
