Help change Wal-Mart's anti-family policies
Wal-Mart faces the largest gender-discrimination lawsuit of all time, with 1.6 million women suing over unequal pay and unequal opportunities. Its managers have told women they “don't belong in management” and that they “can't manage men.” More recently, Wal-Mart has repeatedly denied military moms leave to see their children before they deploy to war zones.

Wal-Mart denied Olga Sanchez leave to see her son deploy to Iraq. The 24 year veteran was told her "commitment" was to Wal-Mart. Similarly, worker Susan Lyons was denied time off to see her daughter, who was scheduled to be on leave from the war. Wal-Mart told Susan that if her daughter's deployment upset her so much, her daughter "should not have joined the military."

We need to ensure that Wal-Mart respects the hardworking moms employed in their stores. This Mother's day, join our mission to change Wal-Mart's anti-family policies for the betterment of women and mothers across America. Sign our petition to CEO Lee Scott, and our three demands for change.

Here is the petition to Lee Scott

Mr Scott,

Wal-Mart has long fostered an inhospitable workplace for women and families. Recent changes to company policies have made the situation even worse, especially for working mothers and military families. We believe it's time for Wal-Mart to adopt more lenient policies, allowing workers to put their families first without facing disciplinary action at work.

Therefore, We, the undersigned, demand the following actions be taken to improve Wal-Mart's anti-family policies:

1) Acknowledge the problem

Enough workers have been hurt by Wal-Mart's unfair attendence policy. Retract the disciplinary actions taken against employees like Susan Lyons, and give families a chance to heal.

2) Let workers put their families first.

Honor our mothers and armed forces. Protect your associates' right to spend time with spouses, children, or parents when they are deployed to or return from war zones. Implement a fair scheduling policy that doesn’t punish workers for unexpected emergencies, family or otherwise.

3) Stand by the Law

Protect the jobs of those who are called on to protect us. Take action to ensure discharged veterans can return as Wal-Mart associates when finished with active duty. Stories like that of Sean Thornton, a veteran whose job at Wal-Mart was NOT returned after his tour of duty, have no place in America.

We look forward to your support for America's hardworking women.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

If told my I could not see my husband off . I would tell that I will see you in court. Families come first. Do you place your own family last . I bet You don't . I spent about $800.000 a month in your store , I don't have to . So if you want my money , put all family's first. You money need last! I will also send this site to all of my friends , who also shop at wal-mart . They might stop shopping there also. Put families before your walet.

i knew it was a bad place i knew how they treated their associates. after all my mom has worked there for more years then i can remember, i even did when i was 17 but now a mom of 3 and witn a man who has 1 we needed the extra income to help thru the rough patch we are in. well the only shift i could work was 4pm to 1am that was still giving me the day to take the kids to school and get to see them some during the day. all good till your on the pay roll. i didnt know that 1am ment that u might still be there working till 3 sometimes 4 am. im so tierd that i cant stay awake during the day thus the few moments i might get with the kids are gone oh and as for 2 days off yeah ok in a wk yes if your lucky and the computer makes a mistake but your not getting them in a row and thats if your lucky. i live in a small oilfeild based town the oil feilds are going down and w.m is the only place to work in this town. yeah great job we have lost some great compenies in this town due to w.m well our store is still at least 100 people short so meny are working 7 days in a row and seems like the only ones that get treated right are the store mgrs. and a few of the ample supply of asst. mgrs. (why do we need 15 of them any how?) they get all the time off they want well id like to have a weekend with my kids i would have liked to have a day off during Christmas break to spend time with them. but hey cant complain now since we got told to dbl check our hours and to my displeaser i find that ive been droped from 40 a week (on paper mind you) to 33 that just wont do i got this job to help my family out but after 5 and a half months we have done the math and to no surprise of mine we are actully loseing money. ive been working 5 to 12 hours over time a week yet am not paid well enough for it to help out at all

My daughter wont shop at wal-mart because of an incident that happened to her when she was 18 she ran into walmart to grab a few things and didnt take a shopping cart and for some reason the fittingroom attendent wouldnt let her take her purse into the dressing room because it was a small backpack purse, they were in style at the time, it wasnt any bigger than a normal sized purse , she'd never heard of that being a rule before but she figured it was a new rule so she checked it at the dressingroom counter and tryed on some jeans real quick came back out she grabed her purse , not knowing someone had stolen her Id drivers license, she continued to shop her hands were full so she took the undergarments in her hand which were on hangers and held them under her armpit while she was grabbing some big bag of candy as she was heading to the check out a manager approched her and asked her to come with him to the office and she was thinking what the hell is this all about, when they got to the office they said she was being arrested for shop lifting , so they called the police and did the whole stealing thing ang charged her for sticking some undergarments on hangers under her armpit, which was in full view for anyone to see and you could tell she wasnt trying to steal anything at all on the video , they just made an ass out of themselves, while all this was going on , there was something else going on that she wasnt aware of , the person who had stolen her ID license looked similar to her from behind same color shirt , hair style, height, weight, they could of passed for a mother and daughter from their back view , until they turned around my daughter didnt look like the lady who had taken her ID who had a record and my daughter didnt have a record and still doesnt have one, and this whole insident happened 10 years ago, but my point is, dont you have to leave the store or conseal whatever your stealing to be charged for stealing and to find out later the dressingroom attendent wasnt supose to tell her that she couldnt take her purse in the dressing room . after a night in jail and one pissed off mother i told off the manager and told him he was an incompetent dick , the judge laughed at the walmart lawyer and said when he viewed the video that you could see what they were saying she consealed as plain as day and that she was headed for the checkoutand to stop wasting his time, so walmart told my daughter she wasnt allowed back in their store, the dressing room attendant was fired because she was working with the lady who stole my daughters ID when she was in the dressing room, all she wamted was an apology for the misunderstanding but the walmart manager said she was working with the other two ladies in a shoplifting ring and she didnt even know them and when they arrested he lady who stole her ID they then found out her ID had been stolen while she was in the dressing room.

I went over my "allowed absences" after my manger "forgot" to coach me on my attendance. Maybe it was because I was tired of how us associates were treated after only 3 months and began speaking out about going union? And furthermore, I'm currently doing a debate for a college class about whether or not Wal-Mart is good for America and after all of the research I have done, I will bash your company's name until I die. I was an overnight stocker at a local wal-mart for 3 years. Making a lousy $8.40 an hour with no benefits, simply because the benefits offered are a big joke. I would see managers smoking on the clock and taking up to 6 breaks. I busted my butt to become a support manager and even managed to raise my wages to $10.80 an hour. I worked my butt off everyday even working off the clock to gain my managers trust and loyalty to the company. When I finally had it, living paycheck to paycheck, I found a better job making 3x as much as support manager. When I gave my notice to my manager, he looked at it and smiled. His response,"Ok, you can quit now and go home if you want, I can make somone else a manager." So the following day I stopped going and even went back to pick up my next check and give the finger to all the managers. F%$K WALMART!

I do not believe the changes should be called "more lenient" - rather "moral." It is no accident that WalMary sells religious books, novel, and the Bible in the hopes of gaining and keeping a "Christian" shopper following. In turn they should practice "Christian" ideals. Motherhood and Fatherhood should be respected and revered and should be a part of WalMArt policy. WalMart used to advertise they were an American company selling American made products (remember those ads about how many American jobs were saved??) We need to know that we can support our fellow Americans when we shop at WalMart - or else we need to shop elsewhere!
S. W. writes

First of all I've been reading most of what others have said about Walmart. I am a former employee of a Walmart Distribution Center. We were paid top dollar and had great benefits. And most all the negativity of Walmart seems to be coming from the stores. But I will say that even in the DC's people get screwed. I was an hourly supervisor who got screwed out of Walmart by an obvious reverse discrimination but was told it was because of conduct unbecoming a manager. Yet I know of an operations manager who was sexually harassing a female and he only got moved to a different shift and department. And another operations manager who assaulted and threatened an associate was transferred to another facility instead of being terminated. As for firing someone for having a doctors note, well Walmart has a no fault policy so unless you have official Walmart Leave Of Absence papers and meet the requirement of being absent 3days straight, a doctors note doesn't mean a thing. Hence "NO FAULT" policy. And the attendence policy for Walmart is very fair. Those who get fired from attendence are those that miss too many hours at work period. At my new union job it is easier to be fired based on attendence policy than what Walmart has in place. And Walmart has a fir scheduling policy, those that complain about it are those that abuse it. It too is a NO FAULT policy so stop whining about it. And sorry to say, Walmart's FMLA and LOA policies don't allow for parents to go see their child off to war. First day of school yes but not war. And sorry to say that it only acknowledges immediate family (spouse, children, parents, grand parents, grand children) not uncles, aunts or nephew and neices. So some people have no right to complain. I am not in a Union job and i had to laugh in my orientation because for all the reasons from my Union rep on why Union's should be allowed in a big company like Walmart, Walmart says the same thing for them to be out. I do know as a former member of management that any Walmart that had finally got some form of union in them ended up shutting the doors claiming it wasn't a cost effective store in a bad location, then they would open up a new store a few miles away. Ever since Sam, Helen his wife and son John died, Walmart has gone south in my eyes. In my 4yrs with the company you could see it. My warehouse was a reverse discrimination place to work, you had to be black or woman to get anywhere. As a white or hispanic male, you got walked on and screwed over. When we first opened we had a majority white management staff and the day I was terminated it was very dark in the management picture ( hardly any white or hispanic males). And dispite what some think Walmart does not have a handbook for keeping unions out. They do all they can to make sure they are kept out even have a Union hotline that gets called immediately if it is suspected that union activity may be about. So they can get their Anti Union crew from home office to fly up to the location in case it is real or serious. So pretty much, unions aren't bad full of lazy workers and yes Walmart has bad problems that need fixing but it's not all that people think it is because my current union job has some of the same damn issues that could be fixed. And I do have to say Walmart doesn't kill small mom and pop shops, it's the cheap folk like you and me who shop at Walmart to save a buck that kill the lil store, matter of fact if you shop at any mall or Target, Kmart or anything of that nature you too are killing the small mom and pop shops. Just cause you can't get a union into Walmart without them shutting you down doesn't make them the complete problem. I'm not too sure about this supposed Sean Thornton issue, from what I've read he supposedly discharged from the Air Force and was denied his job as a cashier back with Walmart.... was it because they wouldn't let him be a cashier or did they not give him his job back period? Because policy is when on military leave, you have 90 days for which your position will be kept saved for your return in your department, but if you exceed that 90 days you will return to a job but it could be on another shift in another department and as long as they offer you employment they are not breaking the laws giving you back the exact hours and department you were originally in. Last four words to say....... Fuck Walmart, I'm Union!!!!!

K. B. writes

I do my shopping with local businesses. Living in a small town, its highly important for locals to buy tires from the local guy who keeps prices low and the local flower shop who gives the best service, the duchess bakery who has better goods than wal mart ever dreamed of anyway! If wal mart could provide service with a smile; rather than their employees pushing me out of my way because they are on lunch, I might do more shopping there myself. the trouble in small towns is once wal mart comes in, its not going anywhere because poverty is more prominent in these areas than riches; we dont have a lush population of the rich, we have a mix of middle class and lower class people and we just cant afford to shop anywhere but wal mart. Though it costs me more, I go elsewhere, but the majority is still going to be awestruck by the GV spagetti sauce as opposed to Ragu at Food World. They have a computer system second to only the pentagon that targets people based on meterolocial conditions and puts pop tarts on sale when there's a storm brewing! It is genius but isn't it a sick mind game?

I think POOR management at walmart contributes to alot of the problems, anyone can be a manager at walmart, all you have to do is go through the training , and have NO LIFE outside of walmart ! I am a mother of 4 children, when they get sick, I can't take a day off of work, walmart does NOT care about their employees at all ! they care about the customers more, when in FACT, it is the employees who keep the coustomers comming back , NOT the managers !!!!!!!!!

I've been anti-Walmart for some time now...but I just read Sam Walton's book "Made In America". I think people would be surprised to know that even back in the 70's and 80's, Mr. Walton was always ANTI union, and he did buy a lot of mdse. from China. He did have a big heart for his employees and THAT is what he would be ashamed to see has declined in his company.

Never again will I find myself in a Walmart OR Sam's. Also, Walmart is the most rabidly antiunion company in history. Walmart management is issued a handbook on how to keep union organizers out. That's illegal, folks. Where's the FBI and Dept of Labor when you need them? If Walmart was unionized, they wouldn't dare discriminate or they'd be shut down by strikes, grievances, unfair labor practices, and Dept of Justice investigations until the cows came home. I have worked for wal-mart for 4 months. I am legally blind and should not have been in the unloading department. When I was hurting, for instance my legs or back, the managers did not care. They would not let me get a back brace until I complained about my back and had frequently asked for one, 2 weeks prior to being allowed a brace. I have a computer degree, and had frequently been asking to be put in the electronics department. The managers would not let me. We had a huge problem happen: I was asked by a manager to unload a double stacked pallet with the electric pallet jack, even though I did not have a license to operate. I made clear to her that I did not have the pre-requisites. She did not care. I brought it out with a pallet jack, the top pallet fell and broke 2 of her ribs. Even after this fact, AND having broken a $2000 TV, managment did not move it's biggest liability to the electronics dept. By the way, there was room, plenty of room for me there, being that there was only 1 person per day in that department. By the way, Mr. Scott, I have been posting the "High cost to low prices", movie everywhere, and are starting to burn copies and give them to employees. I know each person in America will spend $200,000,-$300,000 in their lifetime, if not more. I am glad to report that my mom is no longer a Wal-Mart shopper due to the factual information presented in the film. The age of Wal-Mart, is dying, the general public is waking up to your currupted and hurtful and oppressive business model. Where else can we shop other than the small HEB store which is very diffcult to shop if it is crowded. I have a child in the US Marines and the public has know about Wal-mart practices and how the LITTLE employees are treated. I have seen over the years many unfair practices with friends who worked for store #513 and it looks like it will never end and a NO WIN situation. we are a small town with nowhere to shop. I do give them credit for helping with donations to local charities and our school system and we are thankful for that but our military families are just shoved aside. ) Acknowledge the problem

K. N. writes

You have the power to make a huge difference and set a GOOD example in America. Why do you constantly have to choose the cheap, unethical way of running a business? Greenwashing with Earth Day ads, proving to be one of the most UN-American companies in America, and treating women terribly. Get your act together, Wal Mart!
J. D. writes

C'mon Wal-Mart--WakeUp. When are you going to start treating your employees with fairness and respect??
C. W. writes

I quit shopping at Wal-Mart in 2001, when I realized your corporation is "Slave-Mart".

I will continue to boycott your store and take my business to Costco which is unionized, pays a living wage, offers world class benefit package, does not sexually harrass, nor discriminate against female employees and is an EEO employer.

I don't care if Costco has higher prices, it is a much nicer place to shop, because you can ALWAYS find a clerk to help you.

Wal-Mart, on the other hand is far to miserly and cheap to hire enough staff to work on the sales floor. I can never find products I need to purchase because your shelves are a mess. The store looks sloppy and your staff looks harried, over worked and stressed out.

I don't care if merchandise worth a million dollars was selling for one penny - I would not shop at your store, and I hope you go bankrupt.

Wal-Mart DISGUSTS me.

P.S. I know a retail store in my neighborhood which is family owned, small, independent retail chain - local to Northern california. They sell the same merchandise as Wal-Mart, for around the same price.

Can you tell me how a retail chain which pays stock clerks who are entry level $10.00 an hour to start? After 6 or 7 years they pay around $16.00 an hour. This retail chain is still making money and everyone is happy.

The heirs of
Wal-Mart are just a bunch of greedy, ignorant exploitive snotty little rich kids who were unfortunately spoiled rotten by Sam Walton. The great grandad of Wal Mart is rolling in his grave. Sam Walton was a pretty cool guy and treated his employees quite well and paid a living wage.

Go pound sand!
G. P. writes

It is an obscene abuse of the national trust for WalMart to hire vets, and yet not stand behind the families of the canon fodder in the making.
M. G. writes

Wal-Mart must change these policies.
K. M. writes

If it was your child, you would be there wouldn't you?
E. K. writes

I have not, and will not shop at WalMart until they treat their workers and the world with more respect. Making money has been priority #1 for the entire WalMart family, with very little concern about their impact on others, the enviroment and the overall health of the US economy. All they care about are themselves.
A. J. writes

I think it is time for Wal-Mart to get smart. Doing business as in the past is no longer acceptable. It is time to treat all people as worthy and due the same respect that you expect from others yourself. Families have unexpected emergencies and you need to recognize not everyone has the money or opportunities that you have had. Your scheduling policy punishes workers. It is time to hire some nice people in your HR department!

As a very good friend of mine is a manager at Sam's club and formerly worked for wal-mart (one-in-the-same), I listen to her on an almost daily basis about the stress she is under CONSTANTLY ! Now her previous occupation was as a manager in a different line of work and she had many challenges however most of those challenges she put on herself. She was respected by everyone from her employers to employees to the general public. She achieved many awards in her previous line of work and was constantly sought out by other establishments to work for them. How do I know all this is true ? she is my ex-wife of twelve years. I shop at the local Wal-mart and when I ask the checker (female) how her day is going, all I hear is negativity. Perhaps Sam Walton should have kept his business in the south where the men like to keep their women "barefoot and pregnant. I'm taking my business elseware !

If I were CEO I would sleep alot better knowing I was appriciated and respected not shameful and helping to make more and more Americans ashamed to be American. M. N. writes

They should be ashamed of themselves.
C. T. writes

Families need to be first. Mother's that are working at Wal-Mart need to be with their children when they come home from serving our country. Wal-Mart should take things like that in to consideration as families are the ones who do most of the shopping at WalMart. I know if a co-worker of mine needed some time with their family we'd all help if needed.Family is the most important thing that we have.We should have the opportunity to take time off without being afraid of losing our jobs...especially if it is for brief visits with children who are in the military on leave. I urge WalMart to make changes in their policies for their employees. Treat them fairly and when it comes to family be there to support them in whatever they need. It means so much when you know that your employer cares about you and your family and what your needs are.

C. G. writes

We constantly hear that it is corporate's fault for scheduling issues. Why can we not just have a regular schedule? If the majority of the store workers had regular schedules, it would cut down on absences and call-ins. There would be no excuse such as, 'I misread the schedule...etc. Also, changing policy such as causing a person to lose full time status after taking a leave for pregancy is just not right. It seems like GREED has bitten Wal-Mart and now it is infected with the disease that GREED brings. I love the people I work with but sometimes, management is sick with power over hourly associates.
E. W. writes

When you start putting people ahead of pure profits, maybe I'll shop in your stores again

Wal-Mart needs to stop lying to their employees
T. M. writes

Sincerely,

Terri Muuss

We refer to them as China Mart very fitting I admit. Everyone wants to make a profit and I don't blame Walmart for that. But a happy employee is a good employee. We are not all expendable. And that comment Walmart made about doing away with layaways because they wanted to serve a different cliente and the people they wanted to serve could afford the items and not have to put them on layaway! Wal-Mart is the most non-union workplace in the USA. I'm proud to have not been in one in 26 years. I hate them all. They exist on the labor of housewives and kids fresh out of school that don't know any better. Housewives who never had a job and want to make some bucks. HA What a joke.

I was in the Walmart Store in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii today and overheard workers talking about one of them not having health insurance although she worked more than 20 hours a week.

I also witnessed several nervous workers learning to cut fabric because they had evaluations coming up and although they did not work in that department, or a neighboring department, not knowing how to cut fabric could have a negative influence on their evaluations.

They seemed truly nervous.

I'd rather go to a store where I can get most of my needs met in one place, then go to another for a few items left I need, then try to use your store, and have to stop at 3 stores! Once again, the American public has been treated like dog meat. Wal*Mart's unfair policies against women and minorities has been nothing less than an embarrassement to the hard-working families and individuals. They need the rght to retain their jobs after their return from military duty. Anything less would be a grave tragedy of monumental proportions to the American public. One final thing: CEO Lee Scott would be wise to resign from Wal*Mart entirely; his reputation and image have been nothing but a God Damn joke to the consumer public. Any and all anti-family policies on behalf of Wal*Mart have been subjective and disgusting to everyone. He understands nothing about the United States Constitution ... let alone the 14th Amendment where everyone should be entitled to due process and equal protection in this country. Mr. Scott -- on the other hand -- has never understood anything about the United States Constitution. Do not be surprised if former Wal*Mart employees would sue for illegal termination in the next 12 years. He will be enduring embarrassment of epic proportions. God Help You ... Mr. Scott!! When companies like Wal-Mart have a consistent pattern of discrimination, usually an investigation will show that the cancer is growing from the top, down. The owners of Wal-Mart need to get a new attitude about women in business and they need to replace the CEO, Mr. Scott, with someone more sophisticated and humane. Upper management should also be looked at and those unwilling to change their attitudes and decisions, should be let go. Wal-Mart has had a long history of discriminating against women--both its female workers and its female consumers. A. G. writes

Sincerely,

While you could write off this petition with the explaination that local management are the cause of the problem, the buck always stops at the top. The responses that Susan Lyons, Olga Sanchez, and Sean Thornton received would have clearly disqualified a new WalMart applicant on either of those tests. My son worked for Sam's Club. After seeing how he was treated at work despite his remarkable and consistently high sales in the electronics department month after month, and how I was treated by supervisors while I waited as long as an hour and a half in that parking lot in the wee hours of the morning after his original, overnight stocking shift was scheduled to end, I've stopped shopping at anything WalMart.

D. A. writes

Mr Scott,
Wal-Mart has long fostered an inhospitable workplace for women and families.

Sincerely,
T. K. writes

So is WalMart patriotic or not? Do you support our troops or not? Do you support family values or NOT??? Put your money where your mouth is WalMart!
E. D. writes

I won't shop at WalMart for several reasons. When I see your ads on television, particularly the Tavis Smiley show on PBS, I am disgusted. You are putting more effort and money into changing the PERCEPTION of your company than you are into changing the CULTURE of your company. The ads are propoganda and a hoax. Shame on you! It would be so simple to do the right thing. You can afford it! Sam Walton must be rolling in his grave to see what has become of his company.

Wal-Mart is THE ANTICHRIST. In order to have a successful career there, you either have to be CROOKED or STUPID, i.e., crooked enough to not care or too stupid to even NOTICE everything that is SO WRONG with Wal-Mart. I should know. I grew up in Bentonville and used to babysit for Sam Walton's grandkids... SAM was a GOOD MAN and Wal-Mart only became a rampant cannibal when Sam died. TRUTH HURTS all but those who KNOW IT AS TRUTH.

W. F. writes

So much for Wal-Mart's famous "Made in America" flag waving ads! Supporting the country means supporting the workers whose families protect the country. You make money hand over fist at these people's expense and the very least you can do is give them the little time they request for family time with those fighting in Iraq. I will NEVER shop at Wal-Mart.

Both of the times that my brother was in active duty it was a very stressful and worrisome time for our family the not knowing if we were ever going to see him. Although we were very proud of him and all the other service people.
K. P. writes

Walmart should be ashamed of their actions.

C. W. writes

You should be ASHAMED of yourselves not letting mother's see their children before they go to Iraq.
K. J. writes

The more I learn about Wal-Mart, the less and less I shop there.
G. M. writes

You all need to learn to walk it like you talk it - at least, how you talk it in your ads. It's called human decency.
K. D. writes

It was one thing, when as a truck driver I was forced to unload & re-palletize every load I ever brought to one of your warehouses, or pay your prices to have it done by illegal aliens. It's quite another thing to treat women with such utter contempt. The last time I checked, women have rights just as do all the rest of us.
K. S. writes

Such deplorable behavior from your management staff is the main reason I left Walmart myself. What if there were no armed forces? Walmart would not exist! We would most likely be a communist state where capitalism is outlawed and the entire Walton family and their cronies would know what it was like to have to live like the rest of America! Walmart lost my business a long time ago!

One fair statement though is, as per Sam's Club, I appreciate your beginning to stock "Fair Trade" items (bananas & coffee). Thank you. However that and any other positive pieces of Wal-Mart doesn't give you reason to not reverse the other unacceptable practices.
