Help us hold Walmart to a higher standard of store safety
During last year's Black Friday blitz, large crowds and poor security lead to tragedy at a Long Island Walmart. Shoppers mobbed the store's front entrance, killing temporary employee Jdimytai Damour and injuring several customers. Since, Walmart has been blasted for its conduct by the media, the victims, and now the government.

Yesterday, OSHA slapped Walmart with the maximum penalty allowed under the law for "exposing workers to the recognized hazard of being crushed by the crowd." OSHA thinks Walmart "should have recognized... the need to implement effective crowd management to protect its employees." We couldn't agree more.

Unfortunately, all this unwanted attention hasn't brought substantive change at Walmart. Bentonville avoided criminal prosecution in New York by pledging to revamp security only in its New York stores. The rest of its stores will presumably see no security enhancement at all. This means millions of Walmart customers and workers in the other 49 states are still exposed to inadequate security.

Today, we are rallying to ensure that Walmart makes a serious, state-by-state effort to boost store security. Sign our petition today and let Walmart know we are serious about safety.

Sign our petition demanding a security overhaul for ALL Walmart stores.

As the nation's largest employer, Walmart has national responsibilities. While Walmart makes legal maneuvers with store safety in New York, more than 4,000 other American Walmart stores are potentially just as unsafe as they were before last year's Black Friday tragedy.

We can hold Walmart to a higher standard. Have you, your friends, or your family seen Walmart cut corners with store safety? If so, please tell your story on our website. If Walmart refuses to reevaluate its own security procedures, we will do it for them, store by store.

Sign the petition and tell your story today

Walmart has already forgotten the lesson of Black Friday tragedy, but we haven't. Help us make security reform a top priority at Walmart.

Pallets stacked precariously after merchandise being unloaded off of truck. Then while being transported to drop-off location merchandise falls to floor. Thankfully noone has been hurt yet especially from the pallets that are stacked very high.

Ladders that are broken in some way but not taken out of service and/or replaced immediately.

Cleaning chemical dispensers in the janitor's closets don't work properly and workers poking holes in concentrated chemical container so as to be able to pour the liquid out without having to use the dispenser. Can cause chemical burns especially if a person does not know there is a hole in the container and then gets the chemical on their hands.

No security guards whatsoever; only asset protection associates who only stay in the store and care about anything being stolen.

All kinds/manner of trash on floor but seen workers walkover/ignore trash when they could have picked it up; even management themselves.

Continuing to use wooden pallets/crates when plastic is a lot safer (ie wood crates fall apart and leave wood pieces, some too small to notice, on floor creating fall hazard whereas plastic pallets do not).

Workers leave carts in the way after they're done with them; they don't push them together and either take them up front or in a place where they are out of the way.

I know customers like 24hr stores but when it comes to stocking with pallets on the floor it would be safer to close the store during this time.

I lived in Lake Charles where this happens. I used to shop there only because they stayed open late when i would get off work. Boxes litter the isles and pallets are set everywhere to where you sometimes have to roll your basket a long w=ay or walk over many things which i did when i fell once. workers saw me and nobody said a word as if i were not there. I was ok and i did tell management about access to their products while stocking. On other visit I bought some Hooters wings hot sauce in a jar to make my own wings. when i took jar home i noticed dent on lid and when i opened it a bad smell came from jar. I returned it and got new one. a week later i was going to buy another jar and noticed that it had same dent and safty seal had been popped. I asked to see management and told her that i clearly told clerks at return counter that the jar seal had been broken and why it had found its way back onto shelf.I got no reply and i informed her that as custumers we should not have been put through that trouble I have not benn happy with walmart tactics . Thanks M.V.

On 4/2/2008, I was a new customer at Wal-Mart. As I was bending down to pick up a product, an aisle sign made of a metal rod holding plastic, fell from its holder and hit me on the top of my head. I have had a headache and facial aches for the past 17 months. I returned to the store the day after the injury to take photos. I realized that HALF OF THEIR ROD SIGNS WERE REINFORCED WITH PLASTIC TIES AND HALF WERE NOT! One of the employees told me, "this has happened before". I am in process of challenging Wal-Mart for a fair outcome to my claim.

I can't take chances with a store that cares not for its employees. Wal-Mart employees died in at least one store during hurricane Katrina. I'm convinced they were ordered to stay there to prevent theft and were washed out the back with all the "precious" merchandise.

Making me work alone, in night shift, with 5+ palates. But don't worry, I quit that job, but now there is only 2 ladies working in softlines at night, and you know they work alone sometimes. That is a BIG danger in that store. Someone please stop it, before they get injured.
C. B. writes

My biggest grievance with safety has to do with our store having an asset control manager, whose primary job is to maintain safety regulations so the company will not be sued, and yet she does not uphold what should be the most basic of safety regulations. Truck unloaders and stockers are not required to wear safety belts, even though they routinely lift and pull heavy merchandise. The strain results in a group of workers constantly suffering from chronic backaches and soar muscles. The next problem concerns the overstock shelving in the general receiving area. There are several sections that are not anchored securely to the floor because of being hit repeatedly by careless forklift operators. It is only a matter of time before one of these shelves, containing pallets of merchandise and assortedboxes, falls. The shelves are also too low for a man of average height to walk under and it is common for someone to walk into these shelves. The number of chemical and food spills in these same areas constantly create hazardous work environments because the floors are not cleaned properly. A surprise OSHA inspection would certainly expose many violations.

The chains were cut. My sister-in-law needs to cut here weight for health reasons, lives near the store and decided to ride her expensive ten-speed to get into shape. Boys were playing around with her bike, trying to take it. The store won't allow her to park her bike inside the garden center. When she approached, the boys intimidated her. She was afraid. Yes, I have. In 1998 I was in a Sam's Club in Corpus, Christi, TX. I slipped and fell in a puddle of water on the floor. Wal-Mart managers were on the scene immediately, and relieved that I was unhurt (except for a bump) they immediately thrust a clipboard in front of me wanting me to sign off on a document that I was unhurt. While I was, the speed they had it there was disconcerting, apparently they have a rehearsed response to incidents like that that involves getting the victim to sign their form immediately. Customer safety is secondary.

Yes, I have seen many things that are accidents ready to hurt someone. You try to find a manager to tell them about the danger or whatever it may be. It takes them anywhere from 25 minutes or longer.I have gotten hurt numorous times, but if you turn in and accident they make you sound like you were not watching what you were doing. So most of the times I just go home and baby it myself. Our store has made all the floor people be cashiers so they don't have to hire any new ones. Then they cut the cashiers that have been with the store for a long time. Their hours are cut to down to sixteen hours a week. Walmart is very sneaky.
There is so much back stabbing and favorites that it is no fair to the associates that really do work and do their jobs. Those who do work, come to work even if you are sick or have had problems. You would think that they would encourage your commitement to your job. No, we are the ones that are forgotten. Unless they need people to clean and fill shelves because a "Big wigS" Are visiting. It is really scary to think that anyone can walk in there in the middle of the night and do whatever. The employees mean nothing to walmart managers.

I believe they cut corners with my own safety. I worked in hells deli, Grand Island NE-North store. I, in spite of requests for help and being alone for closing never got help. I quit. and Walmart management lives in denial as always. I wonder... Does our President Obama know about how mistreated people are and ill-gotten Walmart Corp. really is? I, have a long hard heartfelt story that is ignored. The chemicals they use for clean-up make people sick. Kay's chemicals are environmentally hazardous. I think what happened in New York was the most horrible neglectful, thing I have ever heard in shopping experiences. They shouldn't have closed their doors to allow an anxious crowd to wait outside. I think the Pride of Walmarts fate should be just as that precious young mans life when it came to end. Enough Walmart leaders. You have become evil! Boycott walmart! No more super-centers supporting child labor in third world countries! Lets spend our hard-earned money feeding those children so they can walk away from their labor to education!

I normally do not shop at Wal Mart, but I went in for something specific seen there by a friend, and it was for a non-profit event (had to get a large amount of food). There was a cart in the middle of the aisle with frozen cherry pies in it. The pies were melting through thier boxes and leaking red liquid all over the floor in the middle of an ailse. It was gross. The store smells bad and there are no employees around to ask for help. I wanted to scream!
P. M. writes

When I was in line paying for my groceries and my spaghetti sauce fell out of my cart and shattered behind my cart. There was spaghetti sauce and glass all over the place. The cashier saw what happened but ignored it. I had find a worker myself to clean up the mess. I could not believe it. During the hole time, the cashier continue ringing up my other items, like nothing had happen. Needless to say, I was furious.

My co-worker called the local police dept who sent an officer to the store and when she related the story and the store's reaction, he wanted to talk to the asst mgr in question and he apparently gave her the riot act that it was indeed the store's responsibility to do something about this particular situation.

I worked for Wal-Mart for a year, and during that time, I was promoted from Grocery Stocker, third shift, to a night accounting associate. During that time, I was injured when the chair, which was the cheapest one on the shelf in the furniture department, I was sitting in this chair as it fell apart and I injured myself, a month or so later, I was written up for this accident even though I had told my supervisor it was falling apart, but he wrote me up as the accident being my fault and I was told never to discuss that incident with any other associate. I did anyway, as I felt very mistreated and unfairly written up, I was also told I was lucky that I was not responsible for the bills I had from the emergency room and doctor visits. When I fell there was a chip out of the floor where the wheels of the chair were caught in, but they replaced it while I was on a medical excuse as my arm was in a sling, I was allowed to only ride on a handicap cart all night, and straighten the shelves I could reach, even though that was against the doctor's orders, but my supervisor did not care to listen to my complaints. I had found an error in the accounting office where a large sum of money was missing, over $10,000. but they did not care about that either, he told me to not worry about that error and just to concentrate on my own job if I wanted to keep my job. I was then demoted to stocker and was put on the GM side of the store and was treated even worse than I was when I was in the Acct Office. My hours were slowly cut from 40 down to 10 a week, and my benefits were cancelled on me for lack of hours, and eventually they got what they wanted, whenever someone runs their mouth about conditions at that particular Wal-Mart, they are treated as badly as possible until they quit. Hopefully the fines will continue and help Walmart to finally wake up!!!

Yes. My mother tripped over a wood palette left in the middle of an aisle. She had just had a heart catherization and thought she had pulled something in the groin area and could hardly walk a few days after she tripped. Walmart gave her the run around for months because she refused to accept less than $200.00 for her subsequent doctor trip to her specialist Columbus, Ohio. They are totally irresponsible. The wood palette should have been moved as soon as it was empty. You are not looking at the floor when you are scanning the aisles of a store. My mother has since passed away so I do not remember if the store was in Ohio or Kentucky where she lived.

I don't go anymore. 10-12 yrs ago a partition between restroom stalls had come apart and was Scotch-taped at the post. I inquired at customer service and they acknowledged that that was the way they do it. It was like that for a yr or more (at their old store.) I don't shop there because their food prices are higher than our local grocery stores and I feel sorry for their employees, and I think that Walmart has not only destroyed downtowns across America, but, has played a great part in destroying America itself, by underselling all lines of products that are made in USA, replaced by outsourced products that have no guarantee. Stores, factories, jobs & pride have all been sacrificed, and, in my opinion, America itself is next.

The manager cooked hot dogs, hamburgers, and sausage on the grill outside. He put our just freshly cooked food on top of the leftover food from the afternoon shift (in a crock pot). What a health hazard and the manager that did it was a grocery side manager. They also put oil down the drain in the deli and motor oil down the drain in the maintenance. OSHA should check on Walmart more. They would find out . They also have employees work over and then have them sit in the break room until their extra time is up then they can clock in. I have seen everything that I am telling you about and would take an oath that all this stuff is true.

A lady came up and told him not to waste time getting the ladder and just to climb the shelves, he hesitated but proceeded to obediently climb the shelves at one point he nearly caused the whole thing to collapse. There were multiple customers including myself standing in the isle that could have been seriously injured had the shelve decided to topple over, not to mention the yound employee and his incompetent manager. In 1994, my family was in the process of purchasing our first home. We went to the WM in the new town. At the time we were excited about having one in town. My husband and I went in to purchase some shelf paper to get a head start on our new home. While in the store looking at the display, an employee was working on the aisle behind us trying to stock his merchandise. He pushed too hard forward to get all the items up and he pushed merchandise off the upright shelf on our side. The items that fell hit me in the head, knocking me into a shopping cart, and then to the floor. The inventory fell because there were no barriers holding the merchandise on the shelves. The employee changed his story 3x when talking to us, the managers, and the courts. As a result of this incident, I had to endure a major brain surgery to fix the damage done to my head. During pretrial preparations, my husband and my attorney went into this same store to take pictures of no shelf barriers and they were removed from the store by security and management. After two trials, two long years of being harrassed, loss of evidence by Walmart, firing of all employees involved, and numerous lies presented by WM, the jury found in favor of WM and no negligence on their part. They actually convinced the jury that I pulled down merchandise from over 8 ft and higher. We were later sued by WM for frivolous lawsuit, forced into bankruptcy, and then having to recover from major brain surgery. I have NEVER been into another WM and I hold my breath whenever my friends and family go into one. There is alot more to this story but I really don't want to relive all the details ever again.

They have safety procedures posted in back stock room, but it does not say where to go when and if a Tornado hits. No training on fire extinguishers. They do not want people trained in 1st Aid as they feel they may get sued if an employee offers it. Who knows how much toxic waste was dumped into the landfills from that single employee...That was the only one I could think of off the top of my head... Besides asking my husband, who works there, to run after people who have been stealing out into the parking lot (because of inadequate security), a couple of these people carried weapons; A fellow employee was nearly stabbed... I know there were way more, because they did that stuff all the time, but I just can't remember off the top of my head. I used to work at a Wal-Mart in Houston, TX. I worked in the Automotive section as an overnight stocker there for about 6 months before quitting. On a few occassions I would get a box of chemicals where one of the bottles had busted and would get on my hands. One time I had a chemical actually get in my mouth and face. Every time a chemical would get on me, I would try to find the MSDS pages on the product so I would know how to clean myself properly and if there were any issues I should be aware of. But, I never could find the info on the products. It simply was not in the online MSDS. When I told my night managers about this, they did nothing but simply tell me to rinse it off with soap and water.

Back in 2006, when the Las Vegas area Wal-Mart had more special sale items than ever before. There were additional police on hand and extra precautions. They had opened the doors and erected barriers to hold back the crowds. However, the situation went from calm and orderly to a riot when a manager declared over the loudspeaker that the merchandise would be distributed on a “first come first serve basis.”

There was suddenly a loud roaring sound of people screaming, pushing forward. They attacked the police officers, Wal-Mart associates, anyone standing in front of the pallets of the items (electronic, toys, appliances, and house wares). I was at the door of the store but I could see the mass of humanity pushing, shoving, fighting, yelling, and behaving like a pride of lions on the first meal. Wal-Mart supervisors jumped onto the pallets and began to throw items into the crowd to save their employees from being crushed by shoppers. It took this effort and the depletion of the items to bring order. The police arrested at least 10 shoppers; five Wal-Mart employees were injured.

Wal-mart cut corners many ways in this store. They half way fix tools that workers have to use to save money. This issue in fact caused me too sustain a very horrific accident.I fell ten to a concrete floor flat on my back.Causing injury to my back and head. The ladder collasped from this rigging of the ladder. The asst. mgr. was aware of this and told me to use it or be terminated. Now when i fell the manager of the store made the maintence man get the ladder and throw it in the compactor with in 15 mins. of me falling.znow i work at my job everyday in pain.Just too barely make a living. And another thing they made me use my vacation time while i was out on workmen comp.

On Black Friday 2006 I went to a new store that had opened in Honolulu, HI. At a set time,(9 a.m. I think) employees opened pallets of toys to a large group of shoppers. The item on this pallet was Lite Brites for about $6.00. I was not interested in this item but was caught in the crowd waiting. When the employees opened the pallet and ran away, I was pushed from behind by the crowd. My glasses were knocked off, crushed by the crowd and I basically had to elbow and push very hard against the crowd to get out. I had been pushed all the way to the pallet and received scrapes and bruises on my arms from this. I was so upset that I went to the manager, yelled at him for the lack of control and swore I would never go back. Of course the manager offered to have the Walmart optical dept. replace my glasses but I wanted nothing to do with them. It was the most frightening experience of my live. All for a $6.00 item. How stupid!!!!

I have been run over by a Wal-Mart employee in an electric wheelchair in an incident that could have been avoided. My sister has been stalked by another Wal-Mart customer before, and an acquaintance of mine was even assaulted in a Wal-Mart parking lot while securing her two small children in their car seats. Enough is enough, Wal-Mart! Lack of security is one of the many reasons why I boycott your company. I hope Sam Walton comes back to haunt you.

My mother, who worked for Walmart in Concord, NH, and is legally blind, was forced to leave her job unpacking shoes and stocking them on racks to help a customer because no one else in the department was "available." The customer wanted a pair of shoes on the top shelf, and my mother found a ladder and tried to climb up to get them. The ladder was defective, and my mother fell, breaking her back. She underwent multiple surgeries, and of course Walmatrt tried to immediately fire her so they wouldn't have to pay workman's comp. That failed, so they now pay the minimum they possibly get away with while my mom is now permanently disabled, as well as blind. When my mom's lawyer went to see the ladder, it had mysteriously "disappeared."

worked there 7 years. My list: Poor warehouse flooring force employees to drag pallet jacks instead of just rolling them, they use damaged ladders, don't provide employees with personal protective equipment like gloves (even those that work in the froze coolers have to steal gloves off the sales floor), use broken/damaged electric pallet jacks and lifts. Mold is a common problem around drain sinks and from rain leaks that go un-fixed. Unloading truck are by far the most dangerous activity. The frozen grocery trucks are always wet, sometimes icy which mixed with 1000lb pallets rolling down hill out of the truck, will continue to hurt employees
