This is an extreme example of Wal-Mart putting its bottom line ahead of its own workers. What the Shank family is going through is heartbreaking. Why Wal-Mart continues to prolong their suffering is beyond reason. Debbie Shank, like millions of Wal-Mart employees, gave her best to the corporation, and deserves more in return. Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer with more than $12 billion in profits last year, and it has a responsibility to the Shank family, and all of its associates, to do better. Wal-Mart claims it has a right to recoup this money. However, its legal rights, and what is right, run counter in this tragic situation.
