WAKEUPWALMART.COM’S STATEMENT ON TODAY’S WAL-MART LAYOFFS

The Morning News is reporting that earlier today, Wal-Mart called 700 employees in to meetings and informed them they were being laid off. All 700 employees affected are from the Wal-Mart headquarters office in Bentonville, Arkansas. The layoffs come just days after Wal-Mart announced that its January same store sales rose 2.1%, exceeding its monthly sales forecast, while most retailers saw sales decline.

"Our thoughts are with those who lost their jobs at Wal-Mart today,” said Meghan Scott, Director of WakeUpWalMart.com, “Wal-Mart likes to brag that tough times for America are good times for Wal-Mart. Indeed, its sales have gone up as the American economy has suffered. Today's layoffs are a sad reminder that even in Wal-Mart's good times, it is not willing to stand by its employees."
