Adrienne's testimony regarding Fair Share Health Care in Connecticut:
"Hello my name is Adrienne Ward and I work for the Hartford Wal-Mart Store. I am here today in strong support of Senate Bill 465 Fair Share Health Care. As a worker who will be directly impacted by this legislation I thought you should hear my story in order to put perspective on the crisis we Wal-Mart workers are facing. I pay $49.50 every two weeks for health care. I have an annual $350 deductible. I have a separate deductible for prescriptions, and each prescription ranges in cost from $15 to $35 to $73 per prescription. I make $9.15 an hour. There are times when I live through the pain because to seek medical attention would be to get yet another bill. I always pay my rent late but thank God my landlord understands. I recently had surgery and I had to use my rent money to pay for my prescriptions -- one was $15 and one was $35. Because the prescriptions are too expensive I have resorted to buying much cheaper over the counter medicine; however I have relied too much on them and have developed a stomach ulcer. I want to see something change because it’s like we are discouraged from getting sick it’s like trying to discourage the rain from coming. I urge you to have the courage to pass this law and help the workers who really need it, like me. I remember when I worked for Ames I made more money and my health insurance was much better and cheaper that was an example of a responsible employer an employer who cares about the workers and citizens of Connecticut."
